The course of human history has always made its mark on the landscape. People moved from being hunter-gatherers to farming the land about 10,000 years ago, and since then we have shaped the landscape to suit us.
Landscapes like Stonehenge and Trafalgar Square have defined our culture and our identity through time. Larger landscapes like the Scottish Highlands or the New Forest need management and could serve as green 'lungs' to help protect our future.
Landscape architecture as a specific field came into being in the 1800s, but as you will see, it is something we have always practiced.
