20th Century (continued)

Have a look at the plans for Brasilia, Brazil or the Donnell Garden in California. These both captured the spirit and optimism of an age.

In the UK landscape architects like Sylvia Crowe and Geoffrey Jellicoe became involved in major national projects including the establishment of the Forestry Commission, the construction of reservoirs, the development of new towns and the regeneration of coal fields.

Modernism gave way in the later part of the 20th Century to designs that brought together influences from all periods of history. This seems to fit well with landscape, as landscapes are made up of so many layers of history already.

Have a look at the work of Martha Schwartz or Richard Haag for a taste of how landscapes can be unconventional or playful.
