A sustainable community is one where people feel safe and know their neighbours. It also has good quality homes, open spaces, community facilities, shops, jobs and schools.
Landscape architects are directly involved in designing and masterplanning for sustainable communities. To help them in their planning many landscape architects will spend time doing community consultation to understand what a particular community needs, what the local problems are and how developing public and private space could increase the quality of community life. The types of projects include urban regeneration, schools, playgrounds and playing fields, parks, streetscapes, retail areas, hospitals and healing gardens.
Centenary Gardens in Manchester and the Greenwich Millennium Village are two places where landscape architects are involved in creating sustainable communities.
