Nick Coppin

Nick Coppin is an environmental and landscape scientist, with experience in environmental assessment, protection, conservation and reclamation.

His work has involved most aspects of the investigation and treatment of damaged, infertile and contaminated land and the establishment and management of vegetation.

Nick initially studied Botany at university followed by a post-graduate degree in Environmental Science.

He has worked in many Asian countries and his clients have included the World Bank and National Government Agencies. Current projects include work on quarries and mining areas and revegetating waste dumps. Nick also worked on the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Nick says: “Landscape scientists tend to be at the ugly end of the business and a lot of work is in cleanup and reclamation and revegetation areas that have been damaged by previous use.

“A landscape scientist is very much working at the science end and understanding what’s happening in terms of the soil, pollution, the relationship with the plants and maximising the opportunities for the vegetation to grow and for the landscape to heal itself.”

"Landscape architects understand what engineers are trying to achieve, and appreciate the landscape and biodiversity advantages of using vegetation rather than hard engineering structures"
