Merrick Denton Thompson is a board member for Natural England – an environmental agency set up by the government to conserve and enhance landscapes and wildlife in both rural and urban areas. Merrick has specific responsibility for the South East of England and the proposed South Downs national park.
He is also a founder and trustee of the Learning Through Landscapes Trust, which campaigns for better school grounds. He was awarded an OBE in 2002 for services to education.
Merrick believes that landscape architecture is the profession of the future.
He says: “These are very, very exciting times for the landscape profession. I absolutely adore the profession because it’s really at the interface between people and natural systems. I believe that the landscape profession is right at the doorway of a new beginning because we know now about the natural environment, the importance of sustainable living and the landscape profession stands at that interface between people and place.
“The prospects for earning a decent living are extremely good. The profession stands at a very, very important moment in time when humanity has had quite a devastating impact on the natural resources of this world.”
